How Do Electric Pressure Cookers Work?

Electric pressure cookers are made up of 3 main components:

  1. The inner container
  2. Electric pressure cookers.The base of the pot

  4. Steam outlet

  6. Float Valve and Silicone Stopper
  7. Anti-blockage shield

The inner container

It is a removable pot for cooking. When heated, the liquid inside boils and generates steam. Without an escape route, the pressure inside the pot builds pressure.

The internal container of the Instant Pot is made of food grade stainless steel (304 18/8), with a very robust triple layer with an aluminum center for proper heat distribution.

The base of the frypot houses the microprocessor, pressure and temperature sensors, the heating element and the control panel.

The microprocessor is the heart of the third generation electric pressure cookers, and it works with built-in sensors that automatically monitor and regulate pressure and temperature based on the selected program.

Steam outlet

Although they differ in appearance on some models, the steam outlet has 2 positions: “venting”, which allows steam to escape, and “sealing”, which traps steam in the inner container to create pressure.

If the pressure rises beyond the normal range, the excess steam due to physical effect will lift the valve and steam will escape through it.

Sealing Ring

When the lid is closed and the steam outlet is in the “Sealing” position. The lid and the inner pot will exert pressure on the sealing ring to create a tight seal. It is made of durable silicone rubber, which allows a secure seal once heat is applied.

Float Valve and Silicone Stopper

When sufficient pressure is created in the inner pot, the float valve rises and the silicone stopper completely seals the pot.

Once pushed up, the float valve serves as a latch that closes and prevents the pot lid from rotating. Even when force is applied.

The tip of the float valve can break from excess temperature or pressure. Without the tip, the hole will allow pressure to escape. The Instant Pot uses a patented push-down pressure release system to release excess pressure, even in the unlikely scenario where the float valve is not destroyed.

Anti-blockage shield

This stainless steel cover prevents food debris from blocking the steam outlet tube, facilitating the fluid exit when it is released.
